Rancid Flax?
(How to Tell if Flaxseed is Rancid?)
Does Flax seed go bad? What would rancid flax taste like?

Thanks Lori, This is a very important question.
Yes, flax seed is a food and can go bad. Whole Flax seed can last up to 7 years, and True Cold Milled Flakes o' Gold can last ~2 years (you will want to check the 'best by date' that is on your container -each is different).
When flax is exposed to heat through the grinding process or storage, the Omega 3 oils can start to break down, denature and go rancid. This is why it is important that flax seed be milled through the Cold Milled process; this is the same concept as with cold-pressed Olive Oil -cold pressed Olive Oil is important to protect the fragile Omega 3 oils.
How to Tell if Flaxseed is Rancid?
Rancid flax can
taste bitter, sour, or just plain 'yucky'. Our flax has a light nutty flavor, but otherwise it is mostly unnoticeable and will mix in well with any food without hardly noticing that it is there. We recommend using
the 'Taste Test'.
Flax seed is food and if it tastes bad or smells bad or has a bitter after taste, then it is likely rancid. You wouldn't eat a rotting apple or any rotting food, so, don't eat rotting (rancid) flaxseed. Since you are paying for food, you want to
get the best quality nutrition for you, your family and your money!
Delicious Flax -Direct from the Farmer
Our cold milled flax is delicious. We have never had a case of it becoming rancid prior to (and sometimes even after the 'best by date') -we get it from the farmer usually right after it is cold milled and packaged -and you cannot get any fresher flaxseed than that!
You can leave the True Cold Milled Flakes sitting on your shelf easy to use every day -Just keep it out of direct sunlight and heat sources.
