One other question... I purchased ground flax seed in bulk... do I store it in the fridge?
Thank you, marisa
*****Hi Marisa, Thank you for your complements! I appreciate your feedback.
Your questions are very important ones because I get them a lot. I will respond to both of them individually.
First Question: How much ground flax seed to I put in my morning oatmeal to feel full and stay full to help with my weight loss?
Actually using flax seed for weight loss is one of the main reasons I love flax and eat it every day! It helps me feel full and to maintain my healthy weight.
It can also help assist with weight loss because flax helps suppress appetites. Read more about weight loss and flax.
The reason ground flaxseed is so great to start your day with to help you feel fuller for longer is because of the Brain Food Omega 3. Flaxseed is a brain food that makes our brains feel happy and satiated. We aren't eating enough Omega 3 and the only way we can get it is through eating Omega 3 foods (our bodies cannot make it).
So much food doesn't have enough Omega 3 because it is cooked, dried, baked or processed. This leaves our bodies and brains craving "more", but really what we need is Omega 3 oil to give the brain its necessary nutrients.
Omega 3 will help our brains feel happy and satiated and this is why we recommend flax seed for weight loss.
The right amount of flaxseed per day can vary from person to person, and here are our recommendations for how much flaxseed a day.
For Adults:
Start with 1 Tablespoon of ground flaxseed a day.
After 2-3 days, increase to 2 Tablespoons ground flax a day.
Continue this to the goal of 2-4 Tablespoons ground flaxseed a day. - I eat about 1/4 cup of flax/day (which is about 4 tablespoons) -sometimes I eat more, sometimes less depending on how much other fiber I am eating!
Drink 8-10 cups of fluids (preferably water) a day.
If you have Crohns, Diverticulitis or IBS, see how much flaxseed a day.
For Children see how much flaxseed a day.
Second Question: I purchased ground flax seed in bulk... do I store it in the fridge?
Well, there are 3 ways you can buy flax seed:
If you bought your flax seed either as #1 or #3 -whole seed or cold milled ground flax seed, then you do NOT have to store it in the fridge.
Here is why-
Whole flax seed is safely contained and will not break down and rot -it is a seed! Store flax seed up to 7+ years in a cool, dark spot (like a pantry or basement) with no problems.
...but remember you do want to grind your whole flax seed, otherwise they can pass right through you!
Cold milled ground flax seed has never been exposed to heat during the grinding process and this protects the Omega 3 oil and prevents it from starting to denature and break down.
...You DO want to keep your cold milled ground flax seed out of direct sunlight/heat source, otherwise the denaturing process can start to break down the Omega 3 and cause it to go rancid.
If... your bulk flax seed is ground flax seed and it did not specify that it was Cold Milled flaxseed...
...then you DO want to keep it in the fridge. This flax HAS been exposed to a heat source when it was ground and the Omega 3 oil can start to denature and go rancid.
If you buy ground flax seed, then it should have been stored in a fridge in the store and prior to that.
If you don't know how it was stored... then use this Taste Test...
If you grind your own flax or you buy ground flax that is not cold milled, then you should taste it...
Does it have a light nutty flavor that is hardly noticeable especially if you eat it with yogurt, cereal, etc?
-Then the ground flax is good and not rancid!
Does it taste bad, smell bad or have a bitter aftertaste?
-This is rancid flax seed that is rotting!
Do NOT eat it!
This would be like eating a rotting apple -it won't provide the nutrition that you are looking for!
